Number Sense and Numeration Lesson 2 – Turn Around Addition
Objective(s): By the end of this lesson the student will be able to:
1. remember this rule of operations: Addition and Multiplication can Always be Mixed up.
For Subtraction and Division, Same order is Desired. Note to teacher, parent, or tutor: These problems demonstrate the associative property of addition. The property is also true of multiplication.  Teaching this as a foundational truth now will facilitate pre-algebra concepts that your child will meet with in the future.

Outline:Did you know that if you add 4, 3 and 2, it is the same as adding 3, 4 and 2 or 2, 3 and 4? You can turn the numbers around any way that you like in addition!

4                 3                   2
3                 4                   3
+2               +2                +4
9                 9                   9

When you add, you can mix the order of the numbers all around and you will get the same answer. Let’s try some more problems.

 5 6 2 2 5 6 +6 +2 +5

 2 7 4 4 2 7 +7 +4 +2

 8 3 2 2 8 3 +3 +2 +8
