Teaching Grammar -  Prepositions and Compound Objects, Compound Subjects
by Debbie Tipton
September 21, 2000

Sometimes the preposition will have Compound objects. That means that there will be two or more nouns or pronouns following the preposition.

I must go the the store and post *office.

(store and office are objects of the preposition.)

*Note that you include only the noun (which is office); the describing word (post) is not part of the object of the preposition.

Sometimes there is a compound subject in a sentence. Compound subjects means that there are two or more subjects in the sentence.

Neither my dad nor my mother went to Mexico City.

(dad and mother are the compound subjects.)

(to Mexico city is the prepositional phrase.)

NOW YOU TRY IT

Cross out any Prepositional Phrases. Underline the subject once and the verb or verb phrase twice.

1.) Outside the building, the cats and dogs played.

2.) Milk or juice came with the meal.

3.) Neither my hand nor my foot hurt after the injury.

I am a stay at home mother of six children. This year, I have once again decided to home school some of my children, and I am really enjoying it. I have chosen this method for special  reasons to help my children and they seem to do so much better with the one on one and are really thriving this year. I am vey active in my church and have been elected to serve another year as Sunday School President. Life is busy at our house, but when we all work together, everything gets done and life is great. I enjoy writing and sharing experiences and concerns with others. I hope and pray that some of my works can be of benefit to each and everyone who stops by. Debbie
