THE CIVIL WAR
FOR KIDS. A history with 21 activities by Janis Herbert
is a super book if you are studying the Civil War with your children. It
is a history of the war with real photographs of the people, places and
events that made up this war. It also includes a timeline, maps, glossary
and resource list.
What we liked especially was the
hands-on activities that the book includes. With this book your children
can make a North Star Safe Quilt. They can send a message with the Create
a Code activity. They can look authentic when they make a Soldiers Uniform
and A Coffee Can Drum. Other activities in the book include: Drill exercises,
Berry Ink, Play the bones, Acting Out Antietam, Signaling With Wigwag,
In Deep Water, A Housewife Sewing Kit, Homemade Butternut Dye, A rebel
yell contest, Playing General, Building a Lean-To, Homemade hardtack, A
makeshift Stretch and Battlefield bandages.
The book says for ages 9 &
up which is nice as it is hard to find books with hands-on activities for
the older ones. But as you can see would also lend itself nicely to including
the younger set! We think this book is well written and very nice.
